Alamo Drafthouse Cinema coming soon to the neighborhood
See you in September!
We’ve felt the void of the luxury movie theater in the Seaport District. Enjoying a glass of wine in the comfort of a spacious recliner while watching a new release was a little bit of heaven, no matter what the cost. So when ShowPlace Icon Theater announced it was closing back in 2021, we were disappointed.
Well, great news! The Boston Globe reported that a new cinema would take over the former home of the ShowPlace Icon Theater. And we have an updated opening date of September. (Thanks, Ratty! ) It looks like Alamo is hiring too!
Austin-based chain Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will be opening a 10-screen theater with over 700 seats and luxury recliners at 60 Seaport Blvd. It will also have a bar, The Press Room, and serve beer, wine and craft cocktails. The decor will feature a printing museum vibe, complete with working letterpress and more than 10,000 vintage movie ad plates from the 1930s through the 1980s.
We can’t wait!

thank you for all your information I am from Southie but live in Everett but always come back and visit Castle Island
love reading all your post
Although I don’t live in Southie, I think it’s great that an Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is finally coming to the Boston, MA area. It’s about time. The fact that Alamo Drafthouse has a zero-tolerance policy regarding cell phone use during a movie is also great. When is it due to come in, btw? A curious, inquiring mind wants to know. It would be great if there were more Alamo Drafthouses. Thanks for the info.
How do they enforce the “zero tolerance” policy ?
Does a patron leave phone in a box prior to admittance ?
Are they told,. or asked to refrain from answering or calling ?
Do they refund when a phone perp is caught ?
Are there any exceptions to the policy ?
Is it about pirating a movie by phone ?
Every single person who is out on the town has a phone on them, some have two.
What happens when a patrons phone rings…is shooshing going to offend someone… and cause a brawl ?
No policy… better idea.
I thought they were going to open last January. What’s the delay
I’m not sure!
Glad to hear that the Alamo Draft house is coming to Boston. sounds like a wonderful place to see a movie and have fun! Donna “Perry” Marceau. Hope to see my former City Hall and Savin Hill Civic Association friends there!
Actually, the way that Alamo Drafthouse enforces their zero-tolerance policy on the use of cell phones for texting, talking, and for flashlights in the theatre is that they warn the offender(s) first, then if they violate the “no cellphone talking, texting, or using one’s cell phone as a flashlight” rule twice more, the offender(s) get booted out of the movie theatre for good, with no refund of their money or anything. Frankly, if more movie theatres enforced such a policy, more people would come to the movie theatre(s). It’s an excellent policy.
A commenter here somehow thinks that “warning ” someone is the pathway to keep phone usage in check.
When a non law enforcement individual gives another individual a directive such as a warning to do something……there would undoubtedly be a negative response.
We need zero dictators in our society…less policies being enforced by movie theater police.
Choose sides …very carefully and with much thought.
Good luck at the movies.
I live in Somerville, MA, and I’d love to see some movies at the Alamo Drafthouse when it comes to Boston! I’d more than likely take the Lyft there and back, however, since the MBTA is so unpredictable.
