Southie Author Debuts First Children’s Book — and the Community Shows Up Big

South Boston has a brand-new local author to cheer on. After living in South Boston since 2011 with her husband and their 8-year-old son, the longtime resident and mom, Sarah McKinnon, has officially launched her first children’s book, The Cheerful Chip, inspired by the most important critic of all: her son, Will.

The idea grew from a simple but adorable question:

“Where do books come from?”

That curiosity led to storytelling sessions over meals and snacks, and before long, the very first title in the Small Tots Books series was born. The book centers around a lovable crunchy snack discovering the joy of confidence, kindness, and staying true to who they are, even when the world around them changes. The Cheerful Chip is the first of many.

Southie families can get their hands on the book online at www.smalltotsbooks.com, and now — in true shop-local style — in person at Harry & Lou on East Broadway.

And if you missed last week’s launch party, you missed a big one. The celebration on Sunday, November 16 at Clover Clubhouse drew more than 150 parents and children – an impressive turnout for an event organized in under a week. Kids listened to the story, learned how Chip came to life, and soaked up every inch of that beloved neighborhood space. Clover Clubhouse continues to cement itself as a game-changer for local families, especially heading into winter.

Beyond her new author title, she somehow finds the hours to run Southie OT, her South Boston–based business offering educational and developmental support for families and children. Her programs include the girls’ empowerment series “Mighty Mentors,” the school-readiness program “Ready Set School,” babysitter prep for preteens, and a weekly developmental class for parents and newborns at Clover Clubhouse. More details can be found at www.southieot.com.

As for what’s next in the Small Tots Books universe? Book #2 is already in motion — starring another beloved potato food who’s always on the move and has a hard time saying no to fun. Southie readers will officially meet him in 2026, and yes, we’re already guessing.
