Neighborhood Profile: The South Boston Family Fun Day
On Saturday, June 1, the South Boston Moms Club will host the thirteenth annual Family Fun Day, a completely free event in Marine Park for families of all ages. According to Jamie Moss, president of the Moms Club, the tradition—started in 2009—is an opportunity for “the whole community to come out and experience a fun, free day of events for families.” Thousands attend the event each year, and this year’s festivities are shaping up to be the biggest yet.
As for particular attractions, the event will feature a stage with performances all day long. A few highlights to look forward to: The drum band Grooversity, the Boston Children’s Chorus, Bonaparte the Magician, and the Toe Jam Puppet Band. Kids can also expect the presence of face painters, glitter tattoo artists, and balloon twisters. Local vendors—like The Sausage Guy, Capo, and The Broadway—will provide free food, and local nonprofits—like Kickoff 4 Kids, Backyahd, and More Than Words—will have stations set up as well.
Family Fun Day hasn’t always offered such a long list of attractions, but Moss says that loyal sponsors and the growth of the neighborhood have facilitated the event’s growth. “We have a ton of awesome sponsors, like Save The Harbor Save The Day, WS Developments, and Core Investments. And I think that comes along with families growing in Southie as well.”
The Southie Moms Club holds a myriad of similar, smaller-scale community-building events throughout the year. ”Everything we do is for the community,” Moss says, whether it be playdates in the park, new mom coffees, parent nights out, or Toddler Time with the Boys and Girls Club. The Club is always adding new events to their roster, too. “We add more and more as more people volunteer.” Moss also notes that families in Fort Point and the Seaport are just as welcome to attend events as those who live in City Point. “It’s not just about 02127, but also 02210,” she says.
Signing up isn’t required to attend Family Fun Day on June 1st—simply stop by. If you’re looking to help out as a volunteer or would like to see the full Moms Club calendar, visit the Moms Club website here.
