Forget the bobsled in Sochi!  It’s all about Math Olympics right here in Southie!  The South Boston Leadership Initiative is proud to announce the Math Olympics for students in grades 4-8 beginning Tuesday February 4, 2014, and lasting for a total of twelve weeks.  Groups of students will meet for one hour per week and be divided into two sessions (grades 4-6 and 7-8).

The program is free and open to South Boston residents, and will be held at St Peter’s Academy and South Boston Catholic Academy.

The Math Olympics is taught by Southie guy Patrick O’Brien.  Pat is a graduate of Boston Latin School and the University of Massachusetts, is currently a math teacher at a middle school in Hyde Park.

The program will run on Tuesdays at St Peter’s Academy and on Thursdays at South Boston Catholic Academy.  Grades 4-6 will be at 3:30 and grades 7-8 will be at 4:30.  Students can attend either session/day and will only be required to attend for one hour per week, as both days will be the same weekly competition.  Students will be divided into smaller groups and will compete against each other.  The final schedule will be dependent on availability and how many students sign up for each group.  A recommendation from each student’s Math teacher will be required for acceptance into the Math Olympics.  The teacher’s name and email can be submitted along with the sign up form, and the teacher will be contacted for approval.
