Boston Tri’s Kids Day celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2024. For a decade, the Boston Triathlon has been providing space for kids to learn about, participate in, and develop a passion for the sport. To mark this proud milestone, Senator Nick Collins, one of the original boosters for Kids Day, is working with race organizer Michael O’Neil to make this year’s event an amazing experience for kids from South Boston and the surrounding communities. The event will feature the USA Triathlon-sanctioned Kids Splash & Dash for athletes ages 7 to 15, as well as a Kids Fun Run for athletes under the age of seven. Senator Collins has been named honorary Race Director for the Kids Day race and he will also be an emcee during the day.

“I’m proud to be a part of Kids Day at the Boston Tri this year and excited to celebrate ten years of encouraging local kids to foster a love of the sport of triathlon in a safe and supportive environment,” said Collins. “It is extremely important that we provide kids in South Boston with the opportunity to participate in these types of events. The Boston Triathlon team has gone above and beyond to make the event free and accessible to as many kids as possible and a positive experience for everyone involved.”

Senator Collins understood the importance of giving kids the ability to experience the sport and he wanted to provide them with a taste of what it is like to compete in a triathlon in a safe, fun, and inspiring environment. Michael and his partner Will knew from the very inception of the Boston Triathlon the race should make a positive impact on the community – especially with kids.  It was in a meeting with then-Rep, now Senator Collins, that the senator suggested a kids’ race. The Boston Triathlon is a founding partner with the City of Boston to support the Swim Safe Boston program, providing free access to swimming lessons to Boston-area youth. Part of the mission of the Boston Triathlon is to be a positive force in the local community and have forged relationships with local South Boston non-profit organizations.

“Since the Boston Triathlon’s start in 2009, we have been focused on partnering with quality organizations so the race has a positive impact in Southie and Dorchester. Bringing the world’s top Olympic medalist to Southie to race while also meeting and inspiring our Kids Day participants is going to be awesome” said O’Neil, president of the Boston Triathlon. “A Kids Day race was Senator Collins idea and we loved it! It has been exciting to see the impact it has had on the thousands of kids over the years. We are grateful Senator Collins is going to join us for this milestone.”

Kids Day participants will have the opportunity to meet and engage with some of the world’s greatest professional triathlon athletes, some of whom will be coming off competing at the Paris Olympics. These Olympic stars will be handing out medals at the end of the Splash & Dash, participating in meet and greets, and inspiring the next generation of triathletes.

Following the fun-filled Kids Day on Saturday, race spectators will have a chance on Sunday to watch the Boston Triathlon Olympic and sprint-style races, as well as professional competition in supertri Boston, which will start at 12:30 pm after the sprint races are completed. Spectating is free to all.

The Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon features two main races: the Olympic Race, which is a 1.5K swim, 35K bike, and 10K run, while the Sprint race features a 750m swim, 17.5K bike, and 3K run. The supertri Boston race, on the other hand, has athletes compete in three continuous rounds of an all-out swim-bike-run. The distances for each round include a 300m swim, a 4K bike, and a 1.6K run. supertri Boston will be featured in a live TV broadcast to over 250 countries around the world, showcasing Southie on the world stage.

supertri, the innovative and entertaining professional closed league formats that redefined the sport – delivering fast, technical, and tactical racing featuring the world’s best athletes competing in teams on stadium-like courses – is expanding in North America with two new events in Boston and Chicago. This supertri League will be part of a five-stop League that will see the world’s best professional athletes just weeks after competing in the 2024 Olympics. This new supertri League event will be raced in true supertri format, which sees athletes compete in three continuous rounds of full gas swim-bike-run. Elite star American athletes will be in attendance and will compete, including Olympic medallist Katie Zaferes.

Supertri’s mission was to develop a new, fast, and exciting version of triathlon to turn a traditional participant-led sport into a dynamic spectator experience. With award winning events, the biggest and most engaged following in the sport, and a pioneering new indoor Arena Games Triathlon concept having already been delivered, supertri has quickly become a highly coveted sports property.

This year will be supertri’s sixth full season. Once supertri concludes the 2024 US leg of their league schedule, supertri will head to Europe for third editions of supertri events, followed by NEOM, Saudi Arabia, where supertri continues to grow the sport.

“supertri has set the benchmark for triathlon and turned the passion of our founders of creating a true spectator sport into a reality. Our vision is to ‘Inspire the Competitor in Everyone’, and nobody does this better than the amazing professional athletes who will come into supertri off the back of the Olympics and be ready to go full gas from the start,” said Michael D’hulst, supertri CEO and Co-Founder. “We are focused on growth in key markets including Boston, and having an event during the Boston Triathlon is a significant step forward, as we continue to visit iconic locations and have the opportunity to truly inspire by bringing the supertri stardust to mass participation events. We cannot wait to be part of the wave of momentum for spectator and broadcast friendly race formats that redefine the sport.”

Throughout the weekend, all races take place on the same South Boston course, including swimming at DCR Carson Beach, biking on the DCR William Day Boulevard, and running through Moakley Park, which offers spectacular views of the harbor and the Boston skyline.

The Boston Triathlon weekend truly has something for everyone. Even if swimming, biking, and running are not your thing, you can enjoy the spectacular backdrop that South Boston provides to this iconic event while cheering on the athletes who are competing, or volunteering to be a part of the excitement.
