UPDATE: Sailors from the South Boston Yacht Club and the Harry McDonough Sailing Center will face off again for a second series of races on Wednesday, August 16th at 11:45am.  If you’re in the area of Pleasure Bay, you’ll witness some first class raising!

The looming forecast for thunderstorms didn’t deter the crews from the Harry McDonough Sailing Center and the South Boston Yacht Club to participate in their annual regatta. More than 36 sailors participated in the single elimination race, and the top three finishers of two races advanced to the finals.

Crews of two raced in one of the randomly drawn 8 FJ’s (Flying Juniors) and were  equally matched from each club with four boats from SBYC and four from HMSC.

As the storm drew near all teams were focused on the final race, not the stormy skies behind them.  The wind was shifty and lightly blowing but crews made their way to the finish.  SBYC’s Sinead Mulligan and Kiera Lombard took first place, followed by Terry Markos and Declan Callahan in second and HMSC’s  Colin Hingston and Jack Reidy took third place.

And the youngest sailor award went to 9-year old Jaelynn McClure.

As the storm came even closer shortened the race to finish near the docks as all hands helped and all sailors safely returned.  Just after awards were given the heavens opened up and thunder celebrated the sailor’s safe return!  Many thanks to all staff from both clubs for encouraging and sharing the love of sailing.

On Tuesday evening from 4-6 pm there is a family picnic at the HMSC for kids to show of their sailing skills to their friends and family and on Thursday evening there is a dance for the sailors from 6-9 pm. Don’t miss out on the end of summer festivities!
