Meet the future

Take a good look at them.  These kids are our future generation and they are at the crossroad of their lives.  The South Boston Neighborhood House (Ollie) has been a big part of their summer providing support, encouragement and guidance as they slowly leave their childhoods behind and enter into young adulthood.  Through program components that cover everything from academics, job training, volunteering and social activities, a strong foundation is being built for these kids to have success in their lives.  These young adults are standouts who possess the qualities of being leaders who will positively influence their peers, be role models to younger children and inspire all they come in contact with.  This summer they are out in the workforce taking on jobs that range from fitness to Beacon Hill.  They are the SLIP interns.

The S.L.I.P. program was designed to give youth in the community an opportunity to develop valuable career skills from real world experiences in the workplace. Kids between the ages of 11-14 are placed in internships 2 days a week at local businesses where they are given the chance to work and develop the type of professionalism and knowledge that will guide them to becoming valuable members of the workforce in the future.

“The Summer Leadership Intern Program was created to address several critical issues facing our young people today including lack of youth jobs and a lack of preparation for the workforce. Youth today face an increasingly difficult job market and are consistently asked to perform at higher standards, while being given less opportunities for training and real world work experience. Through their summer internships and trainings, SLIP participants are given a drastic advantage heading into the next stage of their lives when compared with their peers. The 2015 SLIP participants continue to show the types of skills valued by any employer: Hard work, dedication and consistency. They have grown as leaders and exemplify what it means to be a positive role model to those around them,” says Andrew Barrett, Coordinator of Education and Career Development at the South Boston Neighborhood House.
