Mother’s East Tavern

Mother’s East Tavern is celebrating the colonial era with specials and bar details!  Enjoy a Fish House Punch cocktail! A colonial-era punch of rum, cognac & peach with deep American roots! Historians say that George Washington did thirteen toasts of Fish House Punch, one for each of the colonies, during a victory celebration at the Fraunces Tavern in NYC. Mother’s East Tavern’s version of the original is absolutely delicious. $13

Try the Hemings’ Housemade Lemon Custard Ice Cream: Chef David used Thomas Jefferson’s original recipe – one of 10 handwritten recipes Thomas Jefferson kept. However, after researching the recipe’s history, Mother’s East learned that Jefferson’s enslaved Chef, James Hemings, was the one who really developed the recipe. So, they’ve made sure to give credit where credit is due on our menu. They serve the custard with macerated cherries, sumac, and mint for $10.

Plus, there are many colonial-style finishes in Mother’s East bar. They ebonized all of the millwork in the bar ourselves. Ebonizing wood is a traditional way of staining wood using a natural solution made from soaking steel wool in vinegar. Our ceiling was hand-painted by Alec using traditional milk paint; this centuries-old formula is a natural, nontoxic paint made from simple ingredients such as milk protein, lime, and clay that produce rich colors. So cool!
