Well, looks like the South Boston iconic hot dog stand at Castle Island WILL NOT be expanding to the greener pastures of suburbia – Hingham! Thank God! According to Boston Eater, Sullivan’s will not be opening the proposed constructing a new 2,000 square foot bathhouse and food stand.
Sullivan’s Castle Island has been selling hot dogs and hamburgers in South Boston since 1951 and has been owned and operated by the same family.
There is something a little unsettling about Sullivan’s – which is synonymous to Castle Island and South Boston – being somewhere else – Hingham no less so to say we are relieved is an understatement! Phew! We’re not good at sharing!
What's wrong with Hingham?
Nothing – it just has the opposite stereotypical characterization of South Boston. i.e Southie – blue collar, middle-class and scrappy. Hingham – white collar, wealthy and refined. Granted we know, South Boston has evolved and changed in the past five years.
Yea, Southie has evolved to yuppies. Who happen to be the children of the white collar residents of Hingham.
Best wishes to Sullivan's. They work hard and are a great community asset. Sure folks in Hingham will enjoy having a Sully's in their backyard.
Rich or poor, everyone loves a $10 lobster roll…
Sullivan's is just trying to cater to all the Southie residents who cashed out and abandoned Southie and moved to Hingham. They always come back to visit Southie, now they can stay down in the boondocks.
All the old Yankees who hated to see Southie people moving to Hingham must be mortified now that Sully's is moving there too. Now you Hingham snobs can put up with all the traffic, trash and all the Yuppies who want chili on their hotdogs.
