Brunch has become THE thing to do on the weekends – whether you’re carbo loading to get ready for some serious football watching or catching up with friends at the end of a long weekend, brunch in Southie is a SCENE.

And luckily for brunchers from City Point to Fort Point, the Heights to West Broadway there is no lack of establishments vying for your brunch appetite (and dollars).

Fairly new to the scene is The Punk & Poet, also previously known as The Playwright and for the really old timers, Molly Darcy’s and the REALLY REALLY old timers, the South Boston Pub. 

We arrived at noon to a pretty packed restaurant, lucky to grab a tall table facing the street. Minutes after we were seated the line to get in was formed. Our server, Antonio, was absolutely delightful and for the record, had no idea I was there to review the spot for this blog.

He suggested drinks and I, naturally, jumped on the offer of a Bloody. I AM A BLOODY MARY SNOB! My step-dad spoiled my sister and me when we were OF AGE by making his own Bloody Mary mix (a highly protected family secret recipe) and I consider myself a self-proclaimed Bloody Mary aficionado.

Well, I have been schooled. The Punk & Poet Bloody Mary, mix made fresh everyday, is damn good. Loaded with olives and crisp celery, it does not disappoint.

We were STAHVIN’ so immediately ordered the guacamole appetizer which, FYI, is a meal in and of itself. And pretty. What a gorgeous presentation. With ricotta salada (shaved ricotta on top) fresh avocado, red and yellow tomatoes, GMO free tortilla chips as well as fried plantain chips, it was devoured in minutes. 

I opted for the Sourdough Sandwich which, after the incredible guac appetizer, could easily be shared. It is an enormous sandwich on delicious buttered and toasted Sourdough bread with scrambled eggs, melted cheese, tomato and avocado. It was grilled perfectly and more than enough food to share.  I honestly could not finish it, My boyfriend had the Steak Hash, a deep bowl of shaved rib eye steak topped with a poached egg, Hollandaise sauce served over potatoes and an English muffin. YUM.

I’d had the Buffalo cauliflower and potato bombs before (think potato skins but as rolls deep friend with bacon and cheese) so no need to try those. Additional offerings on the menu include Eggs Benedict, a classic burger, chicken and apple salad with kale and brussel sprouts and classic French Toast with berries and powdered sugar.
