Joseph’s Bakery is closing its doors – but a new bakery is on the horizon

Update:

Here’s the backstory – so the Masciave Family owned  Joseph’s Bakery + Deli since 1967 – back in May of 2021, it was announced the deli side was “closing for renovations,” but that side never reopened.  It was also announced that the bakery side would remain open.  For almost 12 years,  Annie Nikollo has operated the bakery side.  After training closely with Joe Masciave since 2006, in 2012, Annie took over the bakery.  She posted the following message to let the neighborhood know they are in the process of relocating to a new location in the neighborhood under a different name. See the message below!

Original Post:

For over 50 years, Joseph’s Bakery + Deli has been providing the neighborhood with delicious bread, pastries, Italian food, coffee, and more.  The Masciave Family announced via South Boston Today their retirement and the closing of the legendary bakery located at the corner of K and Fourth.  You still have the month of May to pick up your rolls, egg sandwiches, lobster tails, and coffee!

We thank the entire Masciave family and wish them well in their retirement.  The bakery will be missed.

As a yuppie who has lived in South Boston since 2006 I can say that this is really genuinely sad news.

you do realize that what goes in the place of this wonderful bakery is completely out of the hands of these young urban professionals (Yuppies) you destain so much, right?

The people who sell the property to developers, the developers themselves (which I can tell you largely do NOT live in South Boston), and the Zoning Board are the ones whom you should be angry with. They are responsible the gentrification. The Yuppies are just here for the ride.

Maybe make some calls to every person who sold a 3 family, or bakery or any building in the last 20 years and tell them that since they sold out, they ruined a place you used to love. I say this because all the yelling in the world will not make a single Yuppie feel bad about living in South Boston and reeking the benefits of its location!

Growing up on E 4th I saw the growth of it from building to building as well as watching their kids grow up.
Always a regular food stop of mine all the years I worked in the area and the occasional road trip for take out.
As older generations step back and the second generation steps back…it happens. Yes it’s time. I’ll have my almost 35 or something years of takeout memories of ziti w/children fingers, fish cakes /mac ‘n cheese…subs, soup, chowder, half moon cookies and pizza too.
To Joe, Carmela, Fran and all the kids…wishing you all the best.
    Slainte!

This has nothing to do with being a yuppie (hate that term) or a Southie lifer. I’ve known Annie and her family for over 10 years. They are hard working, kind, loving and genuine people who have been assets to the neighborhood and the community. I know they will find a new spot and continue to be an integral part of the neighborhood.

Joseph’s was a favorite of my generation in the 80’s, I am a genuine southie guy born down Dst but spent many years making my way to Joseph’s for their veil cutlet subs, half moons, manicottis.
Wow, yeah sad to hear, but thank you for the great food and memories, making my life easier by just being there as a real southie staple.
    Good luck in the future.

Well I used to buy pastery at Josephs it was an old time bakery that you don’t see any more. There use to be a lot of places like this but one by one they closed. I liked it because it was a bakery I could get to on the T, in actuality the pastery was just OK nothing cutting edge, or special just convienient. I’m sorry to see it go.I guess all the talk about moving to a new location was just chatter and not going to happen? Please confirmthat the bakery is gone and not relocating?
