For those willing to venture beyond the borders of Southie, crazy idea I know, Lucy’s American Tavern in Dorchester is worth the trip. The first thing you notice at Lucy’s is the bar, set squarely in the center of space it seats about 30 and has close to 50 beers on tap. There is a strong focus on whiskey but fear not, the wine list and cocktail menu is extensive. The beer list ranges from old standbys like Guinness and Yuengling to local breweries such as Lord Hobo, CBC & Jack’s Abby. I like the Dia de los Muertos cocktail: a little smoky, a little spicy and quite refreshing!
The menu has a wide variety of options from Guacamole & Hickory Smoked Wings to Chips & Fish, Fish Tacos & BBQ. Having tried a number of different dishes, my personal favorites are the wings and the fish tacos. My husband swears by the Chips & Fish (yes, that’s what they call their version). Another family favorite is the Chef’s BBQ Board. The wings come in two different styles, Louisiana hot and Memphis dry rub which is my choice; they have just the right amount of smoke without being overwhelming. The fish tacos are hands down one of the best I’ve ever had, grilled (not fried) white fish, a little hit of spice, some crunchy slaw, and a wonderfully creamy avocado. The Chips & Fish are coated with salt & vinegar potato chips which make for a delightfully crispy batter & the fries never disappoint. Lucy’s has a large a patio for the warmer months, plenty of booth seating and valet parking. Along with dinner, the offer lunch weekdays and brunch Saturdays & Sundays.
