Bike ride
Southie Bikes wants you to join in on the fun! Take a casual bicycle ride around the neighborhood with special guest Nicole Freedman, Director of Boston Bikes on Thursday, June 6th at 6:30pm. Nicole will give you the inside scoop for bicycle lanes that may be in the works for Southie residents. You can also share your thoughts about where you’d like to see improvements in the bicycle lane department.
Cyclists of all abilities are encouraged to attend. Please keep in mind that we’ll be sharing the road with other vehicles. Helmets are mandatory. Meet at the municipal parking lot at 455 West Broadway.

how can helmets be mandatory, we’re adults on public streets.
In the one section of Boston where double parking is rampant, and will seemingly not stop or slow down until people are threatend with serious tickets……bike lanes on E or W Broadway are a recipe for disaster…..Boston streets cannot accomodate all these bikers who while preach their desire for inclusion into city roads, yet they are not always willing to yield or pay attention to rules of the road—-this is gonna get weird QUICKLY
No bikes around the Sugarbowl or Castle Island!

Tonight’s ride went really well. Nobody needed to remind participants to stop at the lights, stay to the right, yield to pedestrians, or to allow other vehicles to pass. All laws were obeyed and many safety related issues were discussed. This was a positive ride, that brought to light the ample potential for better bike infrastructure. Nicole Freedman, Director of Boston Bikes, had lots to say about the potential here. I look forward to seeing more and more bicycles riding safely on the roads here in Southie.
Helmets are only required by law for youth up to 16 years old. Adults are not required by law to wear them on the public streets, but everyone was required to wear one in order to participate on this ride. As the organizer of the ride, and many other group rides, I take safety very seriously.
Anyone in need of a bicycle helmet can get one for $5 at the South Boston Farmers Market which occurs every monday at 450 West Broadway. The Boston Cyclist’s Union subsidizes the cost on helmets for all ages, and bicycle locks for youth. Bring your bike to the farmers market, and they will perform repairs to your bicycle for free. Its an affordable way to get helmets for the whole family!
I believe that bikes are allowed on the mainland portion of the Harborwalk, but not allowed on the causeway. It would be good to get some signs that say “please walk your bicycle” at the entry points of the causeway as a reminder. And I think we should all look the other way when kids uner 12 ride there… its a good place for kids to ride.
