Ain’t no party like a summer block party!
Just a reminder that applications are still open for the Mayor’s Office of Civic Organizing’s Summer Block Party Grant! As Boston celebrates Boston 250 and prepares to welcome the global community for the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, the City is eager to showcase its community spirit, shared fandom, and the vibrant energy of its neighborhoods. Summer block parties strengthen Boston’s ongoing commitment to being a City of Belonging and foster a fun, safe, and healthy summer in Boston. Residents and community groups who apply for a block party grant can receive up to $750 to purchase food, party supplies, lawn games, and other items for summer block parties to make it easier and more affordable for neighborhoods to hold community gatherings. Last year, the Office of Civic Organizing (OCO) provided 113 grants to residents and community groups hosting block parties. Get all the details here.
Free Little Libraries in Southie
May 17th was National Little Free Library Day, and there are plenty of locations in Southie to check out. The premise of a Little Free Library is a teeny-tiny pop-up library that provides 24/7 free access to books, placed there by community members, encouraging others to give and take. On any given day, you may find best sellers, recent publications, classics, and plenty of picture books. The idea originally started in Minneapolis and has grown to include thousands of libraries nationwide. Not only do they promote the sharing of books, but they also highlight diversity among authors/characters, bring literacy to high-need areas, & also a way to build community and put books back in the hands of EVERYONE! Josie G. has all the details.

Maureen Dahill is the founder of Caught in Media. Once a longtime wardrobe and prop stylist for brands such as Rue La La, TJ Max & Hasbro, she is a devoted lover of vintage clothing, Martini Mondays, Castle Island, AND a 4th generation South Boston native. Mother of three, married to Peter G.
