Parade Day is less than a week away! Brace yourself, Southie! The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is Sunday, March 19th. Friday is St. Patrick’s Day – so this weekend will be nuts in the neighborhood! Here are some helpful “suggestions” from on local lady.
Avoid the parade at all costs. Spend your Sunday inside your home.
Thousands upon thousands of visitors descend upon the neighborhood for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. If you hate crowds of drunk parade-goers, skip town or stay inside until the coast is clear.
If you do brave Southie on parade day, go to a house party.
A house party is your best option on parade day. No lines, no cover, and less riff-raff. Kindly ask a friend to host the party. If your friend or loved one host the party then you can Irish exit at any point, in true celebration of Irish traditions.
While parade pregaming put on the St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast and take a shot for every butchered Irish accent.
Someone decades ago decided our local politicians, chosen for political policies, should try their hands at comedy. They attempt roast-style jokes and sing songs to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Avoid West Broadway
It is very congested due to many people traveling into Southie on the Red Line. It’s amateur hour. Be prepared to have some form of bodily fluid near you or on you due to the fact many parade revelers enjoy vomiting or peeing in the open.
Avoid the bars
As much as I love our local bars, they are a shell of their normal operating selves. They usually charge a cover and are utter chaos. If the staff is dreading this day, it’s a pretty good sign to avoid them on parade day. They also have a pre-existing early closing time implemented due to people acting like jabronis. The city makes all bars in South Boston close between 6pm-6:30pm.
And to add to your nightmare fuel, teens
There will be large groups of teens with backpacks and water bottles of booze roaming our neighborhood streets. Don’t be surprised if you see tik tok’s newest alcohol trend jugs of BORG – Black Out Rage Gallon. Nothing makes me want to cross the street faster than a group of rowdy and loaded teens walking by. If that doesn’t make you hide in your home and avoid the parade, then I don’t know what will.
Bottom line
The most important message I hope you learn from this post is, to have fun, stay safe, and just don’t act like an idiot. It’s a neighborhood where families live. And for the love of God, don’t pee in our alleys, yards, and on our stoops.
If you do want to celebrate, St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th in Southie, I recommend heading out early for some traditional corned beef and cabbage or be on the lookout for the Woods School of Irish Dance in the neighborhood. Many of our local bars and restaurants will be featuring live Irish music – which will get you in the spirit.

looks like it’s on fifth. Initially the map said sixth but according to the latest map released by organizers it’s fifth.
The map had 5th but the text said 6th. My wife asked and they said 6th.
there’s some confusion about this…please stand by…we’re hearing there are potentially some route issues on the horizon…

The parade will return to E 5th left on G past the high school bear right on Thomas park . Due to some low hanging wires and a rotted out tree on the beach side of Thomas park . We as a committee asked to come up E 6Th then right onto Marion manor side of Thomas park . We felt it was a problem for public safety to go the old route . Due do a clerical error we were not allowed to change the route . But the city has said it will be working on the public safety hazards that were our concerns .
We are very sorry for the delay but it wasn’t brought to our attention until Friday that no one ever actually read the permit .
Things are being corrected and low wires will be raised and rotted out tree limb will be removed . Let’s hope everything is worked out by Saturday .

Can’t believe Grace invoked the “B” word which is so insulting to the real South Boston Irish. The English used the term to describe the way the Irish spoke. They spoke with a “Brogue”. A Brogue was a shoe, intimating the Irish spoke with a shoe in their mouth. The term has been eradicated over the the decades. Yet Grace , probably unknowingly doesn’t understand how it triggers so many in our community. This is a teachable moment for all generations of South Boston Irish, A happy St Pats to all!
…Spot on, pal! I’ve had a major problem with that term/slur since the very moment I learned what they meant by it and I have absolutely NO problem educating people as to same. I’m quite sure the lovely lass we call “Gracie “ meant nothing by it and will act accordingly going forward.

I thought it might be neat to take my 75 -year-old mother to the parade to see South Boston on its special day. Huge mistake. The crowd was so raucous and drunk I feared she might be trampled/vomited upon. No was paying attention to the floats except the one with the local pols.. And it was cold, so we ducked into a place for some terrible hot chocolate. Turned out to be a Keno parlor….
My son later lived for several years on Fourth Street, so i got to see a different side of the neighborhood then and quite liked it. But the parade is pathetic, shameful.
Brogue is a slur Koz?! Boston Irish don’t play the cancel culture game. That’s for the weak liberals to fret over. 🤡
Joe, you are weak if you don’t stand up for your culture ! Brogue and Paddy Wagon are anti-Irish slurs that have to end. Would you condone “Irish NeedNot Apply” in store windows ? The Irish dominate the business, medical, educational & real estate industries in Boston . Because we stood up to prejudice and inequality. Education is the great equalizer which Irish immigrants maximized to overcome ethnic barriers. To deny Boston history is to deny the exceptionalism of the Boston Irish!
