Making the holidays a little brighter
Think of Kathy Lafferty as Santa’s little helper. As the chief operating officer of the South Boston Neighborhood House, Kathy along with a dedicated team, has launched another season of giving in South Boston with The Holiday Helper program. This program aims to help parents that struggle to provide gifts for their children during the holiday season.
The Holiday Helper program began over 10 years ago and has grown considerably in the past few years. As of today, 106 families have been matched with a sponsor. “We anticipate many more to come through our doors. We are so fortunate to be here in South Boston where people have such generous spirits and we are also very lucky to have “friends” downtown who want to help our each year. We work with these folks and “match” them with a family who needs a little help at Christmas time. Last year we “matched” over 200 families and as of today we have over 100 families in South Boston paired with a generous “helper”. We have companies like Merrill Lynch, Bank New York Mellon, ING and John Hancock who take between 10 and 40 families each! We couldn’t do this without them,” says Kathy. 95% of the recipients of this program are from South Boston and range from single moms, to grandparents raising grandchildren, to working families struggling to make ends meet. From one family this year:
“I was recently laid off of work earlier this year, and just found another job. Its been hard for my family this year. I am behind on all of my bills and Christmas is going to be so stressful. I never expected to be in a position to ask for help but she can’t imagine not being able to provide some gifts for my children. Anything you can do to help would be appreciated.”
Pay it forward:
One of the most rewarding experiences for Kathy is when people who received in the past turn around and give back. “For me, the most rewarding part of the program is when I get a call (and it happens every year) from someone who says, you helped me in the past and now I am back on my feet and Im in a position to help. Can you send me a family wish list? For me, that’s what this program is all about -ask for help when you need it – and give back when you can!“

- Where did you go to school? I went to the Tuckerman for Kindergarten, Gate of Heaven, Cardinal Cushing High School, Springfiled College (BA), UMass Boston (certificate program) and Wheelcok College (MS)
- Where do you live now? Not even a whole block from where I grew up, 647 East Seventh Street (between L and M).
- Currently serving not he board of the South Boston Association of Non-Profts as treasurer. She is also on the Policy Board for the South Boston Summer Collaborative and recently became a board member of South Boston Youth Hockey League.
Q&A
Best part about living in Southie? Hands down, the people!
Favorite childhood memory in Southie? Oh, there are so many. I think that South Boston is one of the greatest places on earth! It was so much fun growing up her. I love that my childhood friends are still some of my closest friends today…I loved that we could swim everyday in the summer down at the L, I loved playing softball in the Tuckerman school yard, sleeping out in the backyard on lounge chairs with the entire neighborhood and having the older kids torture us all night and Butch Tobias bringing us donuts in the morning. I loved knowing every single person in our neighborhood…so many things! I still love it here but it’s different for my kids growing up here today…not good or bad…just different.
Favorite restaurant? Not really a Southie zip code but 224 Boston Street. The owner, Kevin Tyo is such a friend to South Boston – a generous soul and a great guy and they have excellent food! Great spot for a quiet casual night out, dinner with friends or a special date night!
Favorite spot in South Boston? My house-I love it when we don’t have anywhere to go and we can have a PJ Day- no sports, no activities, no where to be but home- it doesn’t happen often…but when it does-I love it!
Favorite spot to spend time with your kids? My favorite place to spend time with the kids in Southie would have to be Castle Island where else? We are so lucky to live here and have a place like that to spend time when we have no where else to be.
What is a typical day at the neighborhood house for you? I just laughed out loud (really!) There is never a “typical” day at the Ollie. You never know what you are going to get when you walk in the door. I guess that’s something that I love about working there- besides the people. I could be helping to write a grant in the morning, meeting with a parent in the middle of the day, driving the van in the afternoon and attending a fundraising event or Board meeting in the evening. You start the day with a plan butI always expect a plan B or C or D!! But, it all gets done in the end.
Why is it important for people to get involved and help people in their neighborhood? I think that people in South Boston know why its important to get involved…its how we were raised. We learned from our parents and grandparents…its not in our nature to sit back and watch when someone needs help. Its important because you just never know when you might be that person who needs a little help one day. We have had families who have donated and sponsored another family in the past and one day they are laid off and are struggling to pay their bills and now they are coming to us for help…and on the flip side of that we, just today, had a guy call to say that we have helped his family for the past 3 years and they are back on their feet and want to help. So, we are just a conduit to make this all happen…a place where people can come when they need some help and a place where people can come to help someone else out!

- Sponsor a child
- Host a Holiday party and ask your guests to bring a toy, new book, or a gift card
- Make a donation (check or gift cards) and we will shop for a family or child for you
- gift cards to Stop and Shop or Target are really helpful even after the Holidays when credit card bills come in and our families are struggling!
- Get your co-workers involved and sponsor a family together as a team
- Donate a pair of pajamas, hat/gloves, a winter coat
- Provide a dinner basket for a family
On any given day in Southie, you can find Kathy Lafferty at the hockey rink, the soccer field or at the Pal Gym. She shuttles kids to and from games, practices and various activities all while juggling her own commitments and responsibilities – always with a smile. Her dedication and commitment to not only her own family but to the families of South Boston is an inspiration. She is a making our community stronger and South Boston families a little bit happier this holiday season.
