Columbus Day Weekend

It’s a long weekend this weekend and there’s plenty to do in Southie.  On Monday, banks, libraries, schools, and the post office will be closed today.  The T is running on a Saturday schedule.  Liquor stores are open.  (Phew!)

Eat:
With the chill of fall upon us, by instinct we crave comfort food.  Head to Amrhein’s (80 West Broadway) for their famous Pumpkin Risotto.  It’s back in all its rich and deliciousness and we guaranteed you’ll feel instantly comforted with the first bite.  (Bonus: it’s served in a real hollowed out pumpkin!)

Drink:
Raise a stein! Happy Birthday MJ O’Connors!  MJ O’Connor’s at the Westin Waterfront is celebrating their 5th anniversary on Thursday, October 10th with an Octoberfest. Join your friends and neighbors as MJ’s transform their new (and heated) patio into an outdoor beer garden!  Enjoy complimentary food, music and beer sampling and help us “Prost MJ’s”! (prost means “toast” in German).  There will also be a Stein Hoisting Competition too. Men’s and women’s heats – free to enter.  The winner will go on to compete at the New England Finals at the Samuel Adams Brewery for a chance to win a trip to Germany! This event takes place from 6pm-9pm.

Paint:
Urban Art Bar is going “Southie Serious” with a new South Boston series featuring four unique South Boston scenes to create and take home.   On Thursday, October 10th @ 6:30 PM, enjoy a free instructional class for all Southie residents.  Grand Ten Distilling – a Southie-based distillery –  will be on hand sampling some of their finely crafted spirits and the featured painting will be the Broadway Bridge. Over the next several weeks the following scenes will be painted: Brownstones of K-Street, Castle Island and Thomas Park.  Reservations are required: http://uab101013.eventbrite.com/?discount=02127

Shop:
Southie style-seekers can celebrate.  Pretty Reckless, South Boston’s newest women’s boutique is officially open.  Offering some retail therapy, Pretty Reckless was created by two sisters, Jess and Jaimie Sparks, with two very different fashion senses.  Jess has more of a reckless rocker vibe and Jaime channels more a pretty bohemian style.  Put them together and you get Pretty Reckless – great name for a sit-com too!  Pretty Reckless is located at 485 East Broadway.  Hours of operations: Tuesday-Saturday 11-7 and Sunday 11-4

Two-step:
City Councilor at-Large candidate and hometown boy Michael Flaherty will be kicking it country-style.  On Sunday, October 13th put on your cowboy boots and head to Stadium (232 Old Colony Ave) and enjoy live music played by Digger Dawg.  Event takes place from 7pm-Midnight.  Suggested donation $25.

Join:
Calling all member of Generation Y.  A new group is forming through St. Brigid’s and Gate of Heaven parishes with a focus on the three pillars of social, service and spirituality.  Look forward to special events called Gen Y Fridays.  The first one kicks off this Friday, October 11th from 6pm-8:30pm at the Gate of Heaven Courtyard.  Come mix and mingle with your friend and neighbors, learn about the group and enjoy a BBQ.  For more information you can email: [email protected]
