Boston Fire Aerial Drill Team Returns for Fire Prevention Week
One of Boston’s coolest Fire Prevention Week traditions is back! The Boston Fire Department Aerial Drill Team will be performing across the city this week, including a stop right here in Southie. Made up of Boston firefighters, the Aerial Drill Team performs impressive high-altitude rope and ladder maneuvers that showcase the skill, strength, teamwork, and trust required on the job. The tradition dates back decades and returned in 2024 after a roughly 20-year hiatus. The team will perform around Boston during the week:
- Monday, October 5: City Hall Plaza — 12pm
- Tuesday, October 6: The Mather School, Dorchester — 11am
- Wednesday, October 7: Beethoven Elementary, West Roxbury — 9:45am
- Friday, October 9: TechBoston Academy, Dorchester — 9:45am
- Friday, October 9: Ohrenberger Elementary, West Roxbury — 12:15pm
- Saturday, October 10: Castle Island/Fort Independence — 11am
- Sunday, October 11: Florian Hall for the Local 718 10K — 10:30am
Mahjong Night at Bottega
If you love Mahjong, this one’s for you! Bottega del Sud is hosting a Guided Mahjong Play & Aperitivo Night on Monday, October 5th, with multiple time slots. Designed for players who already know the basics, it’s a chance to practice your skills, play with fellow Mahjong fans, and enjoy some Italian favorites along the way. Get tickets here.
Apply for a Spooky Block Party Grant
Applications for the Fall Block Party Grants are now open on the City’s website until the deadline on Friday, October 23 at 5:00 p.m. The City will review applications on a rolling basis. Good Neighbor mini-grants are available for up to $500 for residents to purchase items such as food, entertainment, and face paint. Get all the details here!
Harbor of Hope Auction & Cocktail Reception
South Boston Community Health Center will host its annual Harbor of Hope Auction & Cocktail Reception on Wednesday, October 7th, at 6:30pm at the Boston Harbor Hotel. The evening brings together friends, neighbors, local businesses, and community partners to support the Health Center and the thousands of patients and families it serves. Guests can enjoy cocktails, food, an auction, and more, all while helping support important programs and services in the community. This year, Gilbert Winn, CEO of WinnCompanies, will receive the Partner in Hope Award, while Peter Welch, founder of Peter Welch’s Gym, will receive the Beacon of Kindness Award for his longtime support of South Boston nonprofits and the community. Proceeds from Harbor of Hope help the Health Center continue to provide accessible health care and support programs for South Boston and surrounding communities.
