Looks like changes are coming for Boston Public Schools.
CBS Local is reporting that on Wednesday night, the school committee approved a $1.5 billion budget. Layoffs and consolidation of classrooms are expected, including the loss of eight classrooms at the Condon School. This is the most of any school in the city of Boston.
77 managerial staff positions are expected to be cut in addition to layoffs from other positions across BPS.
Mayor Michelle Wu added $80 million to the final budget from the city’s general fun, but funding from ESSER – Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund – federal pandemic relief funding – was not granted.
“The anticipated end of ESSER in September of 2024 makes the FY2025 budget one of the most difficult in a decade,” said Mary Skipper, BPS Superintendent.
According tot he Boston Globe, 70% of Boston Public Schools will lose staffing, including cuts to music and the arts.
