Boston Business Journal is reporting that  Ginkgo Bioworks is expanding to 19 Fid Kennedy Ave. in Ray Flynn Marine Park with a 150,000-square-foot lease at a future lab building. The building is being planned at Parcels O and P (old Au Bon Pain headquarters and Matt McDonald steel manufacturing company) and will be an eight-story, 2019,000 square foot life science building.

According to the BBJ article, the real estate firm –  Marcus Partners has proposed to the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) demolishing the Au Bon Pain headquarters to build the life-science building and “repurposing the existing Matt J. McDonald Co. site” into a 9,000-square-foot “amenity center to support the lab building.  The project would also include 96 parking spaces.

Ginkgo Bioworks makes custom microbes for drug, cosmetic and food companies.

City Councilor Ed Flynn recently called for a hearing in the wake of so many “life science” buildings being proposed in the neighborhood including this large scale project on Morrissey Blvd.
