Works to Crack Down on Public Consumption of Marijuana
City Councilor Linehan has filed an order that would prohibit the public use of marijuana in public parks. During the City Council Meeting to be held on Wednesday, August 21st, the Council will be presented with provisions to the already existing laws against marijuana which will now make it illegal for anyone to smoke, ingest, or consume the drug while in the Boston Common or any public park owned by the City of Boston.
The Boston Police Department will have the authority to issue fines of three hundred dollars for each offense if this order is passed. Councilor Linehan filed this order after receiving numerous complaints from residents regarding the large amounts of marijuana being consumed in public parks and the type of atmosphere it is creating. “This ordinance will make all of our beautiful public parks in the City of Boston cleaner and safer for residents of all ages. While I understand decriminalization, the families of this City should be able to bring their young children to any public park for a fun day without having to worry about illegal acts such as public drug use occurring around them. This provision is a big step forward in that process.”
