Premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Whitey: The United States of America v. James J. Bulger a documentary film by Joe Berlinger chronicles the arrest and trial of the notorious Southie mobster. It features interviews with Kevin Cullen from the Boston Globe, former associates Kevin Weeks and Stephen Rakes and victims family members. You can see this documentary now in theaters, On Demand and on iTunes. Berlinger also wrote and directed another riveting courtroom documentary Paradise Lost.
Currently, Black Mass starring Johnny Depp as Bulger directed by Scott Cooper is being shot in Southie and the Boston area with a release in 2015.

All these movies are in extremely bad taste. Even when the family members of victims are included, it seems like exploitation of people who are still ripped up emotionally. While the story of Whitey Bulger itself, reads like just one more story of American crime. They all bleed together at this point. Maybe this is the moment when America realizes it produces so many criminals that it’s all garden variety at this point, and we should stop glorifying them and writing their histories as if they were all Peter the Great.
