Mix it up!
If you like to go out with friends, meet new people and help out a good cause, then Social Southie is for you! Come join Social Southie on Thursday, June 27th at 7pm at the Playwright (628 East Broadway). Come help support Medicine Wheel Productions and their “Beacon to the Dream” celebration. Handmade lanterns will be on display (and available to “adopt”) to help get the word out about the celebration that takes place on August 28th.
What is Medicine Wheel Productions?
Medicine Wheel Productions is a thriving arts organization based in South Boston (K Street) that is transforming individuals and communities from the inside out. World-renowned artist, Michael Dowling, founded Medicine Wheel Productions (MWP) as a nonprofit organization in 2000. Initially a focused painter, Dowling began shifting his work to public art installations in response to a call he felt from the community. The objectives of MWP are to:
- Launch intimate and large-scale public art projects that respond to the needs of the community,
- Engage young people and adults in community building activities and discussions around inclusion,
- Offer young people year-round employment opportunities in the creative sector, and
- Be a leader in redefining the role of art in culture.
Social Southie was formed by a small group of locals and new residents of South Boston who want to change the dynamic of Southie’s social scene by creating monthly social events that give back to the South Boston community. They are “a social group committed to not only having fun, but also giving back to our Southie community.”
“We’re just asking people to come out and have a good time with us, donate a suggested $5 or $10 to a local cause that maybe they didn’t know about before, and enjoy some food and drinks with other people who live in Southie. It’s all about giving back to the community that we all call home,” says Elise Ryan, one of the co-founders of Social Southie (and our Character of the Month for January 2013 https://caughtinsouthie.com/people/characterofmonth/elise-ryan ).

Went to Seapoint to support a worthwhile cause and to meet more new South Boston. Could not have been more dissapointed with what happened. Corraled into a corner. I do appreciate what we are attempting to do but had one of the worst experiences in a while. Staff was overwhelmed and there was a complet lack of management.
