It’s a reality, Southie.  A&E announced Wednesday, it has picked up a new reality series with South Boston center stageSouthie Rules will follow Leah Lentini Winters and  her “wicked-stubborn native South Boston family” – (yes, they used the word “wicked” in their press release).  It will follow the trials and tribulations of the Winters clan as they come to grips with the ever-changing gentrification of their neighborhood  and fight “a daily turf war against the yuppies that are overrunning their territory.”  According to the press release, “these Southies’ (cringe) will stop at nothing to protect their way of life from the occupation – that is, if they don’t kill each other first.”

The show is being produced by Somerville based Powderhouse Production – you know the one that claimed to be “local” and have Southie’s back.  We shall see.  Be on the lookout for cameras around Southie as the real-life drama unfolds.

Let the train-wreck begin!

This sounds like a GIANT step backwards……

  3. Erin May 10, 2012 at 2:27 am

This is so insulting.  About 3 weeks ago I was walking our dog at the Monument.  Production folks on this show started filming myself and my dog.  I asked why and they claimed “not to be those others from Jersey Shore.”  False.  If they are wiulling to lie to get bacfground shots, then we should have no expectation that this will be any real representation.  Shame to the family involved.

  4. mouthie from southie May 10, 2012 at 3:29 am

i dont know bout this reality show?!?!

  5. Anonymous May 10, 2012 at 12:25 pm

The fact that this family would sell out for reality TV says it all…

  6. christine May 10, 2012 at 1:58 pm

This is awful – this will do nothing but perpetuate neagtivity and divide neighborhoods.  Being “wicked stubborn” is not admirable on any level.

  7. Anonymous May 10, 2012 at 3:03 pm

Who came up with the term “Southies” to refer to someone from Southie?  And what is this turf war they are speaking of, this isn’t the bloods and crips.  I just don’t see why us “Southies” can’t get along with the “Mashpees” “Duxburys” and “Franklins” of the world.

  8. joanne May 10, 2012 at 7:56 pm

    we should be outraged

  9. Anonymous May 10, 2012 at 11:56 pm

How about some positive news about South Boston?

  10. Anonymous May 11, 2012 at 12:52 am

I am a loss for words.. I just hope it is not negative when there is so much positive to show!

  11. Murph May 11, 2012 at 1:47 am
Those guys are actually locals and they’ve already hired several more who need the work, I doubt they’ll want to show their hometown poorly, well here’s hoping!
  12. Longtime Reader May 11, 2012 at 5:13 am
So I guess the editorial policy at caught-in-southie is hate first, ask questions later. The Lentini family has a long and storied history in Southie, including two fire heroes. According to all other reports, Powderhouse is NOT the Jersey Shore producer that is making the “Southie Pride” show. One can only speculate as to what would motivate Maureen to slam the Lentini-Winters show sight unseen, including her outright attack in today’s Globe. No one knows how these people plan to represent the community, so maybe slow your roll. Right now the only people giving Southie a bad name are the haters here, led by Maureen herself.
  13. Anonymous May 11, 2012 at 2:23 pm
How predictable for Southie react with pitch fork upright and torches ablaze before even the first episode airs! Maybe this family will help rehabilitate your terrible reputation.
  14. new May 11, 2012 at 2:26 pm

Just what we need, a spotlight on the most ignorant among us – that should help my property values. What exactly will they be showing – this family confronting ‘yuppies’ parking near her triple decker? Daring to shop at the same store? People need to get over themselves. I hope this show fails miserable and this idiot is ostrasized.

  15. Anonymous May 11, 2012 at 2:59 pm

Maybe I’m being naive but as a Southie “yuppie” I can say that all the Southie “locals” I’ve met have been nothing but friendly and welcoming.  We get along great with our neighbors… they bring back our dog when he runs away, they play with our kids, look out for our house, and we do the same for them.  Where is all this conflict coming from that they are supposedly filming?

  16. Anonymous May 11, 2012 at 3:14 pm

As the producers and Leah herself pointed out to the editorial staff at Caught in Southie – the show is not focusing on the “Lentini” side of the family.  Maureen did not “attack” the Lentini-Winters family at all.  She mearly called out terms used in the A&E press release and questioned the vision of Powderhouse and A&E in how they will portray not only South Boston but the family as well.  We here at Caught in Southie smell exploitation and if they do portray South Boston and the Lentini-Winter’s positively, we will be surprised.  Based on the A&E press release, they are setting up the subjects of the show for a negative portrayal.  And you’re right, Maureen is a hater –  hater of people trying to capitalize on the exploitation of South Boston and its residents.  And when you wage a “turf war” against new residents, that doesn’t sound very nice or neighborly – that to us sounds very hateful and no good can come of that.

  17. Anonymous May 11, 2012 at 3:34 pm

Maureen has worked tirelessly to portray Southie in the best, most accurate light possible, she has never ‘slammed’ anyone.  The press release for the show is stomach turning.  Why anyone would want to sign up to be the poster family for the laundry list of negative South Boston stereoptypes is beyond me.  Good luck to the family, we all know no matter what they do the production company with cut the footage to serve their needs.

  18. Anonymous May 11, 2012 at 3:37 pm

I suggest you stop reading Caught in Southie if you’re so at odds with South Boston, don’t trip and fall on your pitchfork on the way out

  19. Anonymous May 11, 2012 at 10:51 pm
Very self-serving. Your alleged concern for this family gets lost in comments such as “let the trainwreck begin.” And yes, she did attack by suggesting Lentini-winters only spoke out against the scourge of drugs in Southie because a camera was present. Grow up.
  20. Anonymous May 12, 2012 at 1:58 am
Nothing about Maureen’s item above, nor in her comments to the Globe, suggest that she is concerned about either the Winters family or the Southie community. What is she so angry angry about? Based on the press release that seems to have hit a nerve, the show is merely presenting the Southie life to a national audience. Are you saying we DON’T say “wicked”? Everyone in my house does. And NO ONE knows what Maureen and the posters here keep saying they KNOW, and that’s what this show is going to be. Maureen assumes a lot that’s not in evidence based on one press release aimed at the mainstream. Wouldn’t it make more sense to support the Winters family in presenting the concerns of the community to a larger audience? This blog only makes us look insular and paranoic. What are you afraid Southie Rules is going to reveal? How Is Mrs. Winters a sell out because she’s out in public addressing important issues at a public meeting? Doesn’t that indicate her intentions? All you’re doing is showing the public that we go after our own – something you just said wasn’t neighborly.
  21. Anonymous May 12, 2012 at 2:34 am

https://caughtinsouthie.comLets not prove them right. A large majority of people ae screaming abouth this new show for A&E and how bad it will be for Southie. By condeming the show and the people who will be filmed before a single episode is aired is exactly what people say about us, that we judge and condemn because we MIGHT not like. The family that will be filmed are life long residents of Southie and have also experienced all the bad press and stereotyping just like everyone else.  Maureen has done an excellant job of highlighting the TRUE South Boston  but Maureen is not the only voice that needs to be heard. Perhaps the “cast” of the shows sees another opportunity to let people know that the Southie is not some racist backwoods town. Why don’t we at least give the show and the family a chance to be heard to say their peice and then judge.  I truly believe that Southie is one of the greatest places to live and raise a family and this an opportunity to show everyone why we all love it so much. So why don’t we all slow down, view the show with an open mind and THEN decide if this represents everything we love abouth our home or if we DEMAND that it be cancelled.

  22. wicked May 13, 2012 at 4:48 pm

ha, well it seems we’ve just heard from the star of the show…

  23. Anonymous May 15, 2012 at 9:02 pm

I was thinking the exact same thing!  I’m willing to bet these comments attacking Maureen personally are Lentini-Winters family members!

  24. Heather Foley May 15, 2012 at 9:09 pm

I admit to being one of the people who thinks this is a terrible idea, and the press release’s quote of  “a daily turf war against the yuppies that are overrunning their territory.” only confirms my fears.  That being said I have never in my life hoped to more wrong.  Oh and CIS you need to make people register to leave comments, anonymity breeds big balls.

  25. Dee May 16, 2012 at 4:51 pm

    . . . . We all know it.

  26. Sharon May 22, 2012 at 7:56 pm

“a daily turf war against the yuppies that are overrunning their territory.” This says it all! This statement sets the tone for the show, anticipated confrontation and drama. A statement like this fuels the idea that there will be confrontation between South Boston natives and new comers . “a daily turf war against the cockroaches that are overrunning their home” A similar statement that sets a similar tone. ” a daily turf war against Walkers  that are overrunning their farm ”  A similar statement that makes me afraid of zombies and how much fighting I will have to do to keep them away. ” a daily turf war against the Southies that are overrunning their South Shore”    This statement would meet much criticism in the media. So I think that it is easy to see why people are afraid of a show that has a trailer with such a statement.

If you don’t want someone filming you just tell the people you don’t want to b filmed. I know the family & their not transplants they were born & raised in what used to b Southie .Southie is now made up of college kids that lived in Southie during there college years & now still live there & treat it the same way they did when they were in college ie partying ,no respect when leavin the bars & wakin up anyone they can .The ignorance is the people that aren’t from Southie it’s not a neighborhood.I was born & raised in Southie & can’t live there b/ c it’s been sold out for the highest bidder.

is there a movie being shot in souithie see signs called flash around

  29. Translpant June 13, 2012 at 7:02 pm

Would you prefer to go back to the Whitey days of drug abuse, major crime and violence?  Southie has changed for the better…it’s now a livable and beautiful city.

  30. Anonymous June 26, 2012 at 3:48 pm
Anyone who knows this family knows we’re in big trouble. A friend of mine dated one of the brothers. Either these people weren’t vetted by A&E at all, or they really are looking to hold up the worst among us as a typical Southie family. ALLEGEDLY, the mother of the two year-old smokes pot 24/7, and the grandfather in the show is ALLEGEDLY a Hells Angel and a heroin addict who ALLEGEDLY has a Nazi tattoo.
  31. Jennifer August 14, 2012 at 1:22 am

The above comment is TERRIBLE & FALSE! I dont know who this ignorant person is, but this is MY family you are speaking of & you don’t have the balls to say who you are. Coward much? You want real southie, I DARE you to write your name . . .  GET YOUR STORY STRAIGHT, HATER! :)

  32. Anonymous August 28, 2012 at 5:49 pm

jezzzzze louiseeeeee! i cant wait to seeee thisss

  33. Anonymous December 5, 2012 at 12:50 am

Yeah, get your facts straight “Dude”…Walter likes “The OutLaws”…Geesch the nerve of some people!!! I saw that movie “The Southies”,wasn’t that the movie where the town’s water got contaminated and all the yuppies started eating “The Southies”, Oh yeah that was “The Crazies”, which is what alot of you sound like,crazy..I am “wicked” confused why anyone would get so upset, with what other people do with their own live’s…fall back and yeah “slow your roll”..You “looosaaa”..

  34. jon December 9, 2012 at 10:31 pm

well maybe you should go ask one of those “maspees”, “duxburys” and “franklins” why they have disgust for “southies”, not other “southies” on a southie forum. also, don’t take it out on the person who came up with the term “southies,” blame the group of people that haven’t thought of any other name to call themselves other than “people from southie”. kind of has no ring to it. and godforbid someone calls you a bostonian…. even though you are from boston.

  35. ray December 9, 2012 at 10:36 pm

buying homes from families that are in financial turmoil. offering them an offer too good to refuse to give up their family home and memories in order to turn the place into condos filled with outsiders? that’s neighborly? why is it a problem when you want to defend your land and your community? but maybe you’re right. kind of wish you were around when the english came to america and kicked all the natives out. i just wish that your wisdon was around then so the natives could be told “no no no. don’t hate what they are doing to your land… that’s not very neighborly.”

  36. Anonymous December 9, 2012 at 10:40 pm

typical bostonians… hating on things when you have NONE of the facts.

  37. Anonymous December 9, 2012 at 10:41 pm

just because you say something, doesn’t make it true. you can’t just say “maureen hasn’t slammed anyone” and call it a fact.

calling it a trainwreck is slamming every single person involved, but okay. right. she hasn’t slammed anybody… only everybody involved. got it.

  38. Anonymous December 9, 2012 at 10:43 pm

i dont think you know how tv works. you can’t just demand someting gets cancelled. it doesn’t work that way. only way to get something off the air is by not watching it. low ratings = cancelled show. making demands = more publicity for the show = more ratings = another season.

  39. Anonymous December 9, 2012 at 10:45 pm

you’ve clearly never been punched in the face by a local just for being in “their bar”

  40. Anonymous December 19, 2012 at 2:03 pm

I can’t wait to see this — I know them and I am proud of all of them. They are just trying to get ahead in life doing the “right” thing – innocent reality tv show. Its not going to do any damage that these yuppies have done already to our town. If anything its going to show WHOS THE BOSS YOU STUPID YUPPIES> WE ALL HATE YOU!

  41. Gary December 19, 2012 at 4:13 pm

“It will follow the trials and tribulations of the Winters clan as they come to grips with the ever-changing gentrification of their neighborhood  and fight “a daily turf war against the yuppies that are overrunning their territory.””

If you’re not one of us, stay the hell away. Great lesson on change and tolerance right there, folks!

  42. Anonymous December 19, 2012 at 5:08 pm

Is this seriously what this show is centered around? Where is this tattoo parlor? Is there even a tattoo parlor in Southie? How do you even mess with Yuppies? Punch them in the face? Yell at them? Let your dog ish all over the sidewalk, nevermind that already happens. Get a life if you feel the need to mess with Yuppies. If you live in Southie, you like to get drunk and walk home from the bar and then walk around the island when it’s nice out. Turf War? Do they think they are going to scare away yuppies and they are all going to move out?

  43. Anonymous December 19, 2012 at 7:59 pm

Your definitely a YUPPIE for writing this. I can just see you in your condo in southie all offended. Get a clue!

  45. Yuppie2013 December 27, 2012 at 3:41 am

It’s going to be hard to be sympathetic to a bunch of grown people all living in the same house, probably paying about a 300/mo in taxes and no mortgage, because they bought the place 50 years ago, complaining about the cost of living.  Yeah, I get how sushi is expensive if you work up a healthy appetite from watching TV all day, but you can always eat something else, dude.  Make your coffee at home, since you aren’t running to the office.  and maybe 5 out of 8 of these folks might want to look for a job to make their sushi and 5 dollar coffee more affordable.  Maybe offer to wash a yuppy’s car or something.

  46. Yuppie 2013 December 27, 2012 at 3:46 am

Why does the press release complain about battling “sushi bars”?  How many sushi bars are there in all of South Boston?  2 Maybe?

  47. Yuppie2013 December 27, 2012 at 3:51 am

Complain to your neighbors who took the money and left.  I’m sure they found a nice little condo in Florida and their arthritis thanks them for it.

  48. wow December 27, 2012 at 5:51 pm

come on people, if they make a show about southie, who carea? its not like it is about you,  stop getting so offened by it. hey, who knows? maybe the show could be good. maybe not.if it sucks, just dont watch it, simple as that

So many people so much negativity! Leah you are an amazing strong smart woman just through your work alone you have helped so many! (and i miss Athena) Jonathan lol I have pictures of you still from a certain “Ollie” trip to FL you guys have an amazing family and have all been through so much, yet still remain strong! Make those of us from Southie proud!!! There is a HUGE difference between a yuppie and someone that moves into Southie and tries to fit in one will be accepted while the one that moves in and tries to act better than the locals won’t…… Not to complicated we can be wicked accepting

this family so far from a south boston family they all had what they wanted growing up  they are the standard spoiled family from south boston that feels the need to let everyone know how unique they are and how hard life has been for them yet they always had vacations nice clothes, cars, everything a kid wants, yet life is so hard only because they are from south boston……its south boston not southie when i mention my neighborhood people looking for attention call it southie….

  64. Mary murphy February 6, 2013 at 1:12 am
It sure sounds to me that most people from southie who have posted comments here are jealous that theyre not the ones on a reality show. The truth is, these people are thinking..it should be Me with the reality show…..lol…..stop being so envious!
