Round Up- Performance art, an art benefit sale (all works $150!),Two open studios events, and South Boston contemporary art shows- all in September!

 
September is when the arts community revs up from its summer dip in programming. This month is packed with free and fun contemporary art events. Many are in our South Boston backyard. Mark your calendars as they say!
 
The September 9th -11th Weekend
 
September 9th
 
Friday, September 9th kicks off the 2011 fall gallery season.  Just about all the contemporary art galleries in the South End’s SOWA district are opened late (till 8pm) on the 9th. It is free and fun to go to. Plan on catching something to eat in the South End or in South Boston after you have your fill of looking at art. Most of the galleries are located on 450 Harrison Ave/Thayer Street area in the South End (02118).
 
September 10th
 
On Saturday, September 10th there are two FREE events at two South Boston Galleries. Both spaces are in walking distance of each other. (addresses for both spaces are in the Gallery round up section).
 
1) Medicine Wheel Productions is having a reception on Saturday Sept. 10th 3-5pm for its current show – A Closer Look by Jeanne Given.
 
2) Proof Gallery is having a performance art event!  On September 10th it is presenting
Time, Body, Space Objects – curated by Alice Vogler formerly of Meme Gallery.
It’s a 12 hour performance with 1 artist per hour and runs from 10am to 10pm
 
September 11th
 
ART SALE on Sunday, September 11th from 2-4pm at Proof Gallery. The space is having its annual  fundraiser!  The Pic/Nic is a 120 minute art market and all works are $150 on a first come first serve basis. This is a great way to start or add to your art collection.
 
South Boston Gallery September Round Up:
 
Medicine Wheel Productions: On view September 1- October 28th- A Closer Look- a solo show by Jeanne Given in collaboration with Medicine Wheel Productions. This selection of vibrant and engaging acrylic paintings of the pond in Given’s  backyard span all the four seasons. The gallery has been turned into a contemplative space via her paintings, the gallery’s moss colored painted floor, and a  8’x 27′ copper rimmed reflecting pool.  Gallery Hours: Wednesdays-Fridays from 12 to 5pm and Saturdays by appointment. The Distillery Gallery features the group show, Make it Together,  and it is up until September 27th.   Make it Together asked artists to collaborate with one or more fellow artists on individual pieces, thus surrendering complete authority by any one contributor. The results is unique to each pairing and encouraged the participants to take risks they otherwise do not take in their routine individual processes. Proof Gallery – a solo show by Sophia Chai that opens on September 17th from 6-8pm and runs till October 15th.
